David’s Ph.D. Quilt - Sunburnt Penguins

A colleague of mine was about to finish his Ph.D. in Interactive Arts and wanted a quilt to keep him warm while writing his dissertation up while teaching Art in Grand Prairie, Alberta. We talked about patterns, colours, and how warm he wanted to be. I had him leaf through several of my quilting books, and he came across the pattern called “Sunburnt Penguins” (K. Renard, Quits from the Heart, II). I think he liked the fat squares surrounded by smaller squares that would enable the theme colours of browns, reds and yellows to interplay with each other – both in a random manner yet keeping with the distinctive overall pattern.

A special find at a fabric sale was a remnant that had a bird holding a twig, and I was able to showcase its head within the design. We elected to use two wool battings in terms of warmth, and it was hand quilted, outlining the penguin and surrounding squares motifs. The quilt was bound in the red that contrasted against the interior, and it was finished in time for David’s Ph.D. graduation ceremony!
